Using case studies including Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), Amy (2015), Framing Britney Spears (2021), and The Last Dance (2020), this paper argues that these documentaries often replicate the exploitative dynamics they claim to condemn. Ultimately, the genre functions less as a transparent window into celebrity and more as a contested arena where subjects, directors, and studios fight for narrative control over artistic legacy.
