Historically, Indian culture has placed women on a high pedestal, revered as the embodiment of Shakti (divine energy). From the Vedic period, where women scholars like Gargi and Maitreyi participated in philosophical debates, to the modern era, the cultural archetypes have been powerful. However, the societal structure also evolved to confine women to rigid domestic roles. For centuries, the lifestyle of an Indian woman was defined by her relationships—as a daughter, wife, and mother. Her identity was often subsumed by her family duties, governed by the principles of sacrifice and obedience. Cultural practices such as ghunghat (veiling) and restrictions on mobility were prevalent, painting a picture of a life lived within the four walls of the household.

Underneath the glitter of henna and the clinking of glass bangles lies a quieter, more painful reality. The pressure to be the "Ideal Indian Woman"—nurturing, self-sacrificing, patient, and beautiful—is causing a mental health epidemic. Anxiety and depression are soaring, but therapy remains taboo. A woman might consult a pandit (priest) for "tension" before a psychologist. However, online communities (like the "The Whole Truth" or "Moms Under Siege" on Instagram) are creating safe spaces.
