"Return of the Great General" is never a literal plot event in Kingdom . No corpse rises. Instead, Hara crafts a sophisticated elegy for the heroic ideal: the Great General returns as a function of memory, training, and battlefield necessity. Shin, holding Ouki’s glaive at Sai, is the return. Tou, weeping after victory while speaking Ouki’s name, is the return. Even Riboku, forced to acknowledge Ouki’s enduring strategic shadow, participates in that return. The fourth arc of Kingdom thus teaches that a Great General never truly leaves; he merely waits for the next generation to prove worthy of his name.
