In a hilarious meta-moment, Toho—the original Japanese creators—were so displeased with the 1998 American design that they made the “real” Godzilla fight and defeat the 1998 version in the film Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). In that movie, the American Godzilla is labeled “Zilla” and is killed in seconds by the true King of the Monsters. Nevertheless, Toho later admitted that the 1998 film kept the brand alive for a new generation.
